Haida Gwaii Trails Strategy

Healthy outdoor lifestyle choices, and opportunities to connect with the natural environment should be available to the people who live on Haida Gwaii.  With the creation of the Recreational Sites and Trails BC Branch in 2007, the provincial government signaled an emphasis on trail development towards growing the tourism sector of the economy.  Working with the people of the islands, our governments and our neighbors, we seek to create a viable local trail strategy that will sustain and respect ecological and cultural features, provide for ongoing trail maintenance, and encourage new interpretive and special interest activities.

Community Forest

MIEDS and the Council of the Haida Nation continue to discuss options of collaborative forest management on Haida Gwaii. Creative financing solutions will be needed for both acquisition and start up costs. We look forward to this becoming a reality in partnership with the Haida and the Province in the near future.

Board Development

Organizations, including the volunteers, staff and senior staff that comprise them, require strong leadership from their Board in order to successfully carry out their work.  While poor organizational performance is not necessarily an indication of poor board governance, it is difficult for organizations to succeed if they lack sound direction from their board.

At the board development workshop on October 23 and 24, 2010, it was intended that the participants learn what it means to be an effective board member and learn how to create a healthy board.  Open this project to view the seminar notes.

Some comments from the workshop:

"Huge thanks to you, MIEDS and the Gwaii Trust for the terrific Board Development Workshop.  I've already adapted much of what I learned to drafting an orientation manual for new members of a committee I work with, and am excited about sharing, with board colleagues, other things I learned" Amanda Reid Stevens

"Thank you very much for giving this workshop, for your energy, time and information.  I appreciate your professionalism."  Evelyn von Almassy

"Thanks for the opportunity - good workshop" Barbara Mack

Agriculture Strategy and Implementation Plan - Resources

On this page you can access a number of the resources making up the Haida Gwaii Agriculture Strategy and Implementation Plan and Background Document. We have posted various reports, agricultural maps, a resource list of local food producers (will be updated as needed) as well as a video of agriculture on Haida Gwaii and clips of the 'Future of Food on Haida Gwaii' Action Planning Workshop (February 2011).

Haida Gwaii Agriculture Strategy

Misty Isles Economic Development Society (MIEDS), the Graham Island East Coast Farmers Institute, Islands Food and other interested stakeholders met in November 2009 to discuss the potential for  agricultural growth as well as the challenges and opportunities facing farmers and producers. The participants identified the need for an agriculture strategy to provide direction to and development of agriculture on Haida Gwaii.

Although MIEDS has overseen the process, the input from the public was the driving force behind the process and provided the direction, priorities, goals and action plans.

Research findings and recommendations including business opportunities can be found in the Agriculture Strategy Background Document.

Research reports, historical documents, agricultural maps, the food producer database and videos of the Action Planning Workshop can be found on the Agriculture Strategy Resources page

Enquiries regarding Agriculture Strategy can be made to Mary Lou Schroeder, Project Coordinator (admin@mieds.ca or 559-8050).

Regional Economic Development Implementation (REDI)

In November 2006, a number of stakeholders Gwaii gathered in Skidegate to discuss a strategic plan for the future of economic development on Haida Gwaii. The Community Viability Strategy (CVS) Steering Committee, comprised of band, local and regional government officials and jointly chaired by the CHN and Province, commissioned the Community Viability Strategy and Action Plan for Haida Gwaii. The CVS document was delivered in March 2007 (Vol 1) and (Vol 2).

The CVS process included community consultation in the form of focus groups, key informant interviews, public meetings and community surveys. Feedback was gathered from 200 stakeholders and 204 community survey responses. At the time of the writing of the final CVS report, the Land Use Plan remained in negotiations, with its signing December 2007.

The Regional Economic Development Initiative (REDI) Plan was developed to 'pick up' where the CVS document left off. The REDI Plan is targeted at tracking the progress made on the identified priorities in the CVS, as well as revising the list of priorities to reflect our current situation.
